Welcome
Welcome to Bopcha's Blog!
We will be studying and experiencing all kinds of Babka's.
Mostly Chocolate, but we will have some occasions to taste Cinnamon Babkas.
Babka: A cake of the Ashkenazi Jews of Eastern Europe filled with Chocolate and sometimes cinnamon.
Babkas are a heavenly creation. I have made it a mission to try all the babkas I have occasion to come across.
I will report my findings here.
First Babka
Ben's Kosher Restaurant. Mineola, New York.
While having a lovely homemade potato knish at Ben's Kosher Restaurant yesterday, I saw that they offered babka on their dessert menu. As a babka fan, I had to try their version.
It arrived cold, hard and mostly frozen!!!!!
I asked the waitress and she replied that it had been in the refrigerator.
I asked if she could "warm it up".
Well she nuked it for a few minutes and it came back to my table warm
and deliciously moist.
It was very chocolaty. There was a dark chocolate flavor. It turned out to be a
very good babka. There was a satisfactory chocolate to cake ratio. It is disheartening when the chocolate is inadequate in relation to the cake.
This is a primary requirement for a good babka: chocolate must, must have the advantage when it comes to the cake in the babka. No one wants the cake overpowering the chocolate!
It I had eaten it the way it was first served, it would have gotten a very
bad review.
Be careful how your babka is served. And always give your babka a second
chance. Words to live by.

I hope you will all enjoy my babka blog in the weeks to come
Lovingly,
Bopcha (polish for Gramma)

Dear Bopcha, I have eaten at Ben's a number times. Love a good hot dog with ketchup. Not kidding. I have never tried the Babka. Next trip, I will give it a try and remind them to serve it warm.
ReplyDeleteI was witness to Bopcha's first official taste testing. I would add that in addition to the ratio of cake to chocolate, the tang of the yeasted bread is also critical. I look forward to participating in future babka taste tests, including the cinnamon. Also, is it true that there is going to be a raffle??
ReplyDeleteYou are correct Maria PN. There will be a raffle and also a recipe contest.
DeleteStay posted for future info!
A Polish grandmother is a babcia. I have never seen this spelling.
ReplyDeleteIt is correctly spelled Babcia. However, I have used a phonetic spelling and also a personal one. My Grandmother was always Bopcha and that is the spelling I will use.
DeleteThanks for your comment!
love this blog and everything about it.
ReplyDeleteThank so much! Stop by often!
DeleteAre there really only two flavors?
ReplyDeleteHi Gerald! As far as I know, there are only the two flavors.
DeleteSounds delicious! I know how you love babkes!!
ReplyDeleteThanks Steve! Hope to share some babka with you soon!
DeleteI wish you would bake me one. Just saying
ReplyDeleteThank you Liza. But I have not tried baking one yet. I will keep you posted if I ever give it a try. Thanks for you comment!
DeleteI found a "Polish Babka" recipe ... but it has raisins and no layers. I am not sure Bopcha will be willing to accept that for review. However, there was also a recipe for a Cranberry-Orange Babka too. She might be willing to try that.
ReplyDeleteI am not a raisin fan. However, if it is a true babka, of course I would be willing to taste test it. Cranberry - Orange however, sounds delightful!
